Ambassador to UN says Cyprus’ cultural heritage destruction by Turkey is “systematic and widespread”

FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE• Tuesday, 18 December, 2012

The destruction of Cyprus’ cultural and religious heritage in the Turkish-occupied areas of the island “is systematic and widespread”, Cyprus’ Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Nikos Emiliou said, while speaking to the UN General Assembly, last Wednesday, December 12.

Speaking on the return or restitution of cultural property to the countries of origin, Emiliou said that many artefacts have become the objects of illicit trafficking, and asked the international community to extend its solidarity and support in Cyprus’ effort to protect an invaluable part of the cultural heritage of humanity
