David Armour Doheny
Lawyer, Preservationist, Author

Born, Cobourg, Ontario, Canada, 2 July 1931.

Ed., Winnetka, Ill. public schools; Trinity College School, Port Hope, Ont., Canada; Williams College, B.A., cum laude, 1953; U.S. Army, active duty in Korea and Japan, 1953-55; Harvard Law School, LL.B., 1958.

 

Lawyer in private and corporate practice, Chicago and Evanston, Ill., 1958-65. General Counsel, General Development Corporation, Miami, Fla.,1965-80. Assistant State Attorney under Janet Reno and Assistant U.S. Attorney under Stanley Marcus, Miami 1981-86 (criminal prosecutor). Vice-chairman, Dade County Arts Council of Arts and Sciences, 1976-1980. Consul to the Netherlands (honorary), 1976-80.
Board President, Spectrum Programs, Inc. (drug treatment), 1973-75.

 

Vice President and General Counsel, National Trust for Historic Preservation, Washington, D.C., 1985-1996; Acting President, 1992.  Board member, Bonnet House, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., 1986-2000. Board member, Partners for Sacred Places, Philadelphia, Pa. 1997-2005.

 

Author, David Finley, Quiet Force for America’s Arts (2006), published by the National Trust, with the assistance of the National Gallery of Art, distributed by the University of Virginia Press. Since publication, has
lectured on Finley’s life and work at the National Gallery, the National Trust, the National Portrait Gallery and the Metropolitan and Cosmos Clubs, Washington, D.C.; Municipal Art Society, New York; Athenaeum, Philadelphia; Oatlands House, Leesburg, Va.; Yorkville, S.C., Historical Society; Miami International Book Fair; Virginia Book Festival,
Charlottesville, Va., and other venues.

 

Married to Carmen (Tess) Doheny; three children, six grandchildren.
